FIXED OR GROWTH MINDSET

Updated: Dec 15, 2024

WHICH ARE YOU?

A growth mindset and a fixed mindset are two distinct ways of thinking about learning, intelligence, and personal development.

Growth Mindset

A person with a growth mindset believes that abilities, intelligence, and skills can be developed through effort, learning, and perseverance. They see challenges as opportunities to grow, embrace feedback, and view failure as a part of the learning process. People with a growth mindset tend to:

Believe effort leads to improvement and success.

Embrace challenges and persist through difficulties.

Learn from criticism and feedback.

Celebrate the success of others as motivation.

Focus on long-term growth rather than immediate success

Example: If someone with a growth mindset struggles with a task, they are likely to think, "I can improve with more practice," or "This challenge will help me learn something new."

Fixed Mindset

In contrast, a person with a fixed mindset believes that their abilities, intelligence, and talents are fixed traits that cannot be changed. They might avoid challenges to prevent failure, feel threatened by others' success, and give up easily when faced with difficulties.

People with a fixed mindset tend to:

Believe abilities are inherent and cannot be developed.

Avoid challenges for fear of failure.

Ignore or become defensive when faced with feedback or criticism.

Feel discouraged by others' success.

Focus more on proving their abilities than improving them

Example: Someone with a fixed mindset who faces a difficult task might think, "I’m just not good at this" or "I’ll never be able to do this, so I should give up."

Key Differences - Approach to Challenges:

Growth mindset: Sees challenges as opportunities.

Fixed mindset: Avoids challenges to protect self-image.

Key Differences - Response to Failure:

Growth mindset: Sees failure as a learning opportunity.

Fixed mindset: Sees failure as a reflection of their limitations.

Key Differences - Perception of Effort:

Growth mindset: Believes effort is a necessary part of success.

Fixed mindset: Believes that if something requires effort, it’s a sign of lack of ability

Why It Matters

Adopting a growth mindset can lead to greater resilience, more effort toward learning, and improved performance in various areas of life—whether in school, work, or personal growth. People with a growth mindset are more likely to continue striving toward their goals despite setbacks.

In contrast, a fixed mindset can limit potential by fostering self-doubt and discouraging persistence, especially when faced with obstacles.

In summary:

Growth Mindset = Abilities can improve with effort.

Fixed Mindset = Abilities are static and cannot be changed.
